You call that a Secret?

I’m sure most, if not all of you, have heard about the Law of Attraction, brought back into popularity by the release of The Secret.

And I say, “brought back into popularity” because it’s not really a groundbreaking concept. In fact, way before The Secret ever existed there were a few other writings that established an identical theme.

History in the Making

As a Man Thinketh – James Allen 1902
Think and Grow Rich – Napoleon Hill 1937
The Strangest Secret – Earl Nightingale 1956

These books birthed the following quotes:

  1. “You are today where your thoughts have brought you; you will be tomorrow where your thoughts take you.” (Allen)
  2. “Anything the mind of man can conceive and believe it can achieve.” (Hill)
  3. “You become what you think about.” (Nightingale)

On the surface, and even deeper in some cases, there is a missing component. There is one thing that is absolutely critical to your success.

And . . . Action!

In The Secret there is a parking spot success story. Someone envisioned a close parking spot and miraculously they received it. In my opinion this example teaches us about more about laziness and under achieving than anything else, but more importantly, even in this example, the person “acted” in order to get the parking spot they desired. They got in the car, plotted the course and headed to their destination. If they hadn’t “acted” then the spot would have went to someone else. Don’t lose your spot in life.

“Thinking is easy, acting is difficult, and to put one’s thoughts into action is the most difficult thing in the world.”
~~Johann Wolfgang van Goethe

The action part is where most of us fall short. You’ve heard the expression, “waiting” for your ship to come in, haven’t you? That statement teaches us inaction. We’re waiting, as if we sort of hope it might happen. Why not swim out to the ship? That way you can get the party started!

In the Beginning . . .

So where did this so called secret come from? You’ve probably heard it a million times. You may be able to recite it verbatim . . .

“Ask and it shall be given to you, seek and you shall find, knock and the door will be opened to you.”
~Matthew 7:7

And

“As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.”  Proverbs 23: 7.

So we can ascertain that the law of attraction originated in the Bible. This is where it was established. So let’s break it down to gain a better understanding.

“Ask and it will be given to you.”

You must first ask. But you can’t ask for something if you don’t know what it is, can you? So set a goal. Decide exactly what it is that you want or you’ll never get it.
Remember the saying “you don’t know until you ask?” Well . . . Ask!

“Seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”

This tells us that we must actively and diligently pursue our desires. Go after what you want, search it out. It won’t just come to you by some sort of magic.

Get on your Feet

Most everyone who has earned and achieved success will tell you that they worked hard. They acted, after setting the goal. They did not just ask, then wait and hope. This too is reflected in scripture.

“Faith without works is dead.”
James 2:20

Successful people handle obstacles, persevere and have faith. They sought and they found. So have the same faith and get started. My Father always said you have to get off of your knees and get to work.

Take some time to set a goal, plan the steps and:

Ask (expect)
Seek (go in search or quest of)
Knock (strike a sounding blow)

And don’t settle for less than you deserve.

Love it! Just what i needed this week. I am asking, knocking and seeking, believing God and His word to me that this is my year. I have been planting the seeds, working the process, building relationships, standing firm that things are going to shake lose as promised. In the last month there have been more nay-sayers and events happen to try and make me give up. “Grow not weary in well-doing for in due season you shall reap if you faint not”. I think I quoted that correctly. Thanks dear friend! We get up and keep going!

As usual, you’ve hit the nail on the head. Glad to see at least one Old Testament reference in there.

Thanks for this Rob. Before reading The Secret I already knew what it’s about because of all the reading I’ve done dealing with the power of thought, so it wasn’t anything new…but you’re right about how it falls short and doesn’t highlight the action component in getting what you want. And that is confusing alot of people. I wonder why they decided to leave that out. Maybe because they know that quick and easy and effortless sells better. I’ve seen books written by the people higlighted in The Secret – Jack Canfield, Lisa Nicholas…- in which they basically make up for the fact that The Secret doesn’t teach about the importance of taking action – so they do their best to address the topic and fill the gap. The Secret is still a good read, but I feel sorry for people who pick up only that book in the self-improvement section and leave other titles on the shelf – it’s not the best information all by itself…it needs to be absorbed in the context of books like the ones you’ve mentioned.
