I Give Up!

After feeling overwhelmed or discouraged with something you were attempting, have you ever said “I give up!” in sheer frustration? Sometimes people bang their heads against the wall and expect the wall to break before their skull does; but that only happens in movies.

Before you decide to give up, or you ding up your head, have you really tried everything?

Don’t hang your head in defeat before you’ve looked at every possible option. You might hit a speed bump or two along the way, but don’t pull over and throw the keys away. It’s actually more of a defeat when you give up without trying your best. That can lead to regret and regret can haunt you forever. You don’t want to live the rest of your life thinking, “If I only”do you?

There is no failure except in no longer trying.
~Elbert Hubbard

I’ve created a checklist of several components that you should try before you throw in the towel. This might get you started properly, or put you back on track to achieving your goals and dreams

Is your goal clearly defined?

It is difficult to hit a goal if you don’t know what it is. If you want to earn more money, exactly how much do you want to earn? If you want to lose weight, how much do you want to lose? What will you do to make it happen? What will you commit to? What will you sacrifice to achieve this goal?

If you simply say that you want a car, you may not get exactly what you want. But if you say you want a Black Convertible Mustang with navigation and a beige leather interior, it’ll be much easier to find exactly what you’re looking for. You can then research the price of this particular vehicle and know how much money you would need to get it and determine the best place to buy it. Be specific.

A goal properly set is halfway reached.
~Zig Ziglar

Have you exhausted every possible option?

Sometimes we try one or two things hoping that’s all it will take. There may be many ways to achieve your goal. If you wanted to build your immune system you could switch up your diet, get proper rest, exercise, stay hydrated, have a positive attitude, take the right vitamins or try any combination (or all) of these to achieve that goal.

Look into how many ways there are that might help you to get to your destination and remember, there’s more than one way to skin a cat.

How long should you try? Until.
~Jim Rohn

Have you set a timeline to achieve the goal?

As I mention here, you must have a way to track your progress. You can do this by setting a deadline. It’s the same as when you were in school and needed to finish a paper by Friday, or when you had to have a report on your boss’ desk by Tuesday afternoon.

  1. Set the goal: i.e. “I want to earn $80,000″
  2. Decide when you want to accomplish it
  3. Get to work

But having set myself these goals, I had to work really hard to achieve them.
~Imran Khan

After you set a timeline, then you can  . . .

Define and refine the steps as you progress.

This is simple. Just like a GPS system in your vehicle, you must outline all of the steps it will take for you to achieve your goal. Read this for more insight on this one.

Remember you can always shift gears if you are ahead of schedule or if need more time. Perhaps you can step it up to meet the deadline if you’ve fallen behind. You’re the boss here, these are your goals, so you make the rules.

When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, don’t adjust the goals, adjust the action steps.

Have you removed the ‘self’ in the equation and any impure motives?

Sometimes we act on emotion, or with self interest and we don’t see anything beyond that. In relationships we want a certain outcome to the point where we don’t see any other possibilities. That process can lead to disaster and disappointment.

Clear your head and your heart, think, and then act on what’s in everyone’s best interest over the long term.

It is not because the truth is too difficult to see that we make mistakes, we make mistakes because the easiest and most comfortable course for us is to seek insight where it accords with our emotions – especially selfish ones.
~Alexander Solzhenitsyn

Have you asked for an unbiased opinion as to how you might do better from someone who’s sole intent is for you to succeed?

There’s a lot of negativity in this world. People will say you can’t do something, or ask why you want to. There are even those who will say you’re not smart enough, talented enough or thin enough to do it.

Who cares what they think!

Find someone who has accomplished what you want to accomplish and ask them how they did it. Follow their model. How can you expect someone to help you if they never did what you want to do and know nothing about it? If you have this dream then it’s meant for you to act on it and carry it out, not anyone else. That also means that you can do it! Your heart or gut will not set you up to fail.

Listen to your heart and block out the noise.

Don’t follow any advice, no matter how good, until you feel as deeply in your spirit as you think in your mind that the counsel is wise.
~Joan Rivers

Have you surrounded yourself with the right people to achieve the goal?

It’s difficult if not impossible to make it on our own, even if it’s only a simple “you got this” from someone else, we need people around us to help us move towards our goals.

Besides encouragement or guidance, we also usually need other help at some point. Who will you need to help you achieve your goals?

  • Will you need your spouse or a friend to pick up your kids one or two days per week?
  • Will you need a trainer to achieve your health goals?
  • Will you need someone to teach you how to use social media to your advantage?

Whatever it is, figure it out and find them. They’re out there.

As I said, we live in a  world where we can be bombarded with negativity so we must seek out those who might encourage us or lead us in the right direction.

I don’t think anybody can push themselves without some help.
~Sean Burke

Have you learned all you can regarding the goal in order to successfully achieve it?

Most people run full speed into things with  a lot of desire but with little preparation or knowledge. That desire can fizzle out pretty quickly after some setbacks occur.  You must be as knowledgeable and as prepared as possible to succeed.  This will give you the confidence necessary to carry it out.

The more you learn, the more you earn. The more you know, the more you grow.

If you want to have a great relationship then shouldn’t you learn all you can about how to do it? Would you try to fix your own car without knowing a thing about mechanics? No, that’s why you bring it to an expert. Therefore you must become an expert at what it is you want to accomplish. Will it take time? Yes. Will the time pass anyway? Yes, so pass the time productively and move steadily towards tour goals.

Remember, you got this!

Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all.
