Chris Medina, What are Words, A True American Idol

Anyone who follows my blog knows that I don’t watch a lot of TV (The Bachelor) but being a musician, I love to watch American Idol.

Undiscovered talent excites me, the live band rocks, and the behind the scenes footage reminds me of when I was on tour, or in the recording studio.

Not an Idol fan? Then you missed what I feel is one the most heartbreaking yet heartwarming moments on television.

This is a true story of inspiration!

Hailing from Illinois, Chris Medina, just like so many others across the nation, was an Idol hopeful, but his personal story is what should inspire you onto great things in life, love and success.

The year they were supposed to be married, Chris’ fiancée Juliana was in a terrible car accident. She suffered a brain injury and is currently bound to a wheelchair needing assistance for many of the day to day things that we often take for granted. True to her beautiful spirit, Juliana told Chris to try out for American Idol, saying the show would be better if he was on it.

Boy, was Juliana right! Chris instantly became a fan favorite, not only because of his pure vocal talent, but also due to the devotion he had for his fiancée, in spite of an event that turned their lives upside down. In explaining his perspective, Chris said (paraphrased):

“I was about to make vows two months before the accident, marry her and commit for the rest of my life, through good and bad, sickness and health, so what kind of guy would I be if I walked out when she needed me most?”

This Idol moment was so emotionally touching that if you saw it and you didn’t cry, you need to have your tear ducts examined!

While Chris seemed to be coasting toward Idol success, much to the surprise and dismay of Idol fans, he didn’t make the Top 24, a coveted spot on the show. The world (of American Idol) was shocked. But Chris has heart, desire and purpose, and that is a powerful combination.

But wait, there’s more.

A charity was created to raise money to assist Juliana with her medical bills, The Laurus Foundation and they have already received donations from Guthy Renker, Topher Grace & Relativity Films, as well as fans across the country. Feel free to add a donation.

Chris released his first single, a song titled “What are Words” that poignantly tells his tale.  You can purchase it on iTunes, it will move you to tears.

While this is an inspirational story, it goes beyond that for me, it has confirmed and reaffirmed one of the success principles I often teach and read about.

It doesn’t matter what you say, the only thing that matters is what you do!

Chris was committed to Juliana before they were married and remains true to her today, by assuming the role as caretaker for her.

Being a success coach, I often hear people say things like the following:

  • I’m going to lose weight
  • I’m going to save more money
  • I’m going to quit smoking
  • I’m going to work harder
  • I’m going to spend more time with my family

But the only way that you will ever be successful at whatever it is that you choose is if you stay true to your word and actually do it.

“Faith by itself, if not accompanied by action, is powerless.” ~James 2:17

Chris, with an entire nation watching, has backed up his words, and does so every day, inspiring a legion of fans!  If he can do it, then why can’t you? Set out to make a difference, even if it only impacts your own life, don’t wait for a tragedy to strike to get you off of your butt, get moving now, don’t just wait, hope or pray for things to happen, you must act.

“Watch your thoughts, for they become words.
Watch your words, for they become actions.
Watch your actions, for they become habits.
Watch your habits, for they become character.
Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.”
