Get the Quarter back!

Regardless of whether or not you enjoy football, it’s timely that I share something I saw over the holiday weekend. Something that struck me as a potential key to success.

Tom Brady of the New England Patriots was chosen at #199 in the 6th round of the NFL draft, not the most glamorous spot. Basically every team passed over him not once, not twice, but five and even six times. This is the eventual 2 time Super Bowl MVP winner we’re talking about, and he was chosen towards the bottom of the 2nd to last round of the entire draft.

He obviously became a tremendous asset to his team. He has 3 Super Bowl victories,  holds several records and he’s not done yet.

Tom Tom Club

Let’s go back in time a bit. Tom Martinez, who is known as the QB (Quarterback) Whisperer, developed a training system to groom up and coming QB’s. One of them happened to be Tom Brady, starting when Brady was a teenager.  When Tom (Martinez) was asked if he could see potential greatness in Brady at that young age, he said no. “Brady wasn’t big or quick” BUT he took to heart the instruction that was given to everyone at this camp, and the difference he saw was that Tom Brady would do it!

“Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do.”
~Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Tom Martinez goes on to say that he gives everyone he coaches a quarter, and he tells them to call him if they need his help. Meaning, he won’t call them. You show the desire and he’ll tell you what’s required. I understand this mentality because if I want to improve, I have to seek it out and then do the work.

To this day Tom Brady relies on Martinez to keep his mechanics fine-tuned, they exchange text messages after every game. Brady’s father says, “Without Tom Martinez, Tom Brady would not have been the quarterback of the New England Patriots.”

That’s some high praise, so wouldn’t any young quarterback want to learn from this guru? Well, Mr. Martinez also goes on to mention another NFL quarterback he gave a quarter to, but this one never called him. His name is Jamarcus Russell. If you haven’t heard of him, an NFL.com analyst called Russell “the biggest draft BUST in NFL history.”

“There is no scarcity of opportunity to make a living at what you love; there’s only scarcity of resolve to make it happen.”
~Wayne Dyer

The QB Whisperer actually went on to say that he could have helped Jamarcus Russell, had Russell called him.

Yikes!! Talk about a missed opportunity.

Choices

I’m sure that both Tom Brady and Jamarcus Russel wanted to succeed, just like most people want to succeed, but the difference was that one listened and acted, and one did not.

Here are the questions for you to ask yourself regarding where you are in your life.

1: Do you have someone giving you sound advice? If not, seek them out, the more valuable you become, the more valuable you will be to others.

2: If you do have someone with a proven track record of success offering you their wisdom, are you listening to it? Are you applying it? Are you acting on it?

“I never worry about action, but only inaction.”
~Winston Churchill

Have an amazing week!
